Voice of America: ‘Protecting Online Privacy’
Tue, February 04, 2014
Consumer Action's Michelle De Mooy, senior associate for national priorities, joined host Ayesha Tazneem of Voice of America's "On the Line" show to discuss protecting online privacy. Todd Gebhart, vice chairman at the computer security firm McAfee also joined the show. The guests discussed how, despite repeated warnings by privacy advocates and security experts, most consumers do not understand the depth and breadth of the threats to their privacy and security online.
"You are being tracked by a multitude of companies," said De Mooy. Gebhart added, "There is so much data whirlig around the Internet, and it doesn't go away."
De Mooy gave a few tips that consumers can use to limit the collection of data about themselves while they are online, but did so with the caveat that with the vast majority of data collection consumers have no choice. This is especially true of consumers who use "apps" on their smart phones. If consumers don't agree to data collection by apps, they won't be able to use the app.
